HOW IT HAPPENED:
Â
The first half was a defensive struggle between the two teams. Miami racked up nine penalty corners in the first 30 minutes, and finished with 19 in the match, but the Lancers kept doggedly turning aside the RedHawks.
Â
Finally, Miami broke through on Negrete Garcia's first goal of the match with less than a minute to go in the half thanks to a strike on a penalty corner.
Â
However, Longwood bounced back in the second and quickly evened the score on a penalty corner of their own. McDermott and
Zoe Tierney played the ball back and forth up top after the injection, and McDermott slotted into the back of the cage.
Â
The Lancer press then earned a goal a few minutes later when
Madison Wiley swiped a pass and found Ramsay on the move. Ramsay hammered the ball home for a 2-1 lead.
Â
Miami answered thanks to Negrete Garcia on a corner, and she finished off her first collegiate hat trick late in the fourth for a 3-2 lead.
Â
Once again, though, the Lancers refused to fold. Less than 30 seconds later, the Lancers earned a corner of their own and executed. This time, McDermott played a low ball forward that Hyatt deflected up and in to knot the score at three.
Â
Both sides created chances in the first overtime, but Miami finally broke through after the halfway mark of the second overtime period. Carlie Servis centered a ball to Wearren for a back post shot and the game winner.
Sophie Mooldijk was sensational in goal for Longwood, tying a career high with 13 saves as the Lancer defense absorbed pressure and stayed solid.
WHAT THEY SAID:
"It was another tough overtime loss for the group," said Longwood Head Coach
Miranda Rigg. "Miami is a great team who plays fast and is super competitive. I'm proud of the style of hockey we played today as a whole group. We did it together. Along with the ability to execute in big moments, that's what we will hold onto moving forward."
