HIGH POINT, N.C. — No. 20 High Point scored thee goals in the first half on its way to a 5-0 Big South Conference victory over the Longwood men's soccer team at Vert Stadium on Friday.
The Panthers (7-2-2, 4-0-0 Big South) extended their winning streak to seven consecutive matches, getting a season-best offensive output. In all, five different players scored goals and six had at least one point, led by Brendan Krueger with a goal and two assists. Celestin Blondel and Alfred Baafi each also chipped in with a goal and an assist apiece.
High Point, which had a fourth-minute set-piece goal disallowed, scored in the eighth, 13th, 17th, 57th and 72nd minutes for the win. The Panthers held 67 percent of possession in the match, including 72 percent in the first half, while limiting Longwood to two shots on the night to post their fourth clean sheet of the season.
The Panthers were off and running early as Krueger tidied up the rebound of a Blondel shot, sliding it past Longwood goalkeeper Max Hinke (three saves), for a 1-0 lead. Ross Johnson made it 2-0 when his header off of a corner kick from Jefferson Amaya found the back of the net.
Krueger then spotted Bondel with a through ball, which he slid underneath Hinke for a 3-0 advantage.
High Point added second-half tallies from Anthony Ramirez and Baafi, respectively, to close the scoring.
Longwood, which fell to 3-6-2 overall and 2-2-0 in the league in defeat, got shots in the match from Jesus Macaya and Simao Coelho, with the latter's 64th-minute effort forcing a save from goalie Josh Caron. Luke Snyder played the final 13-plus minutes in goal for the Panthers.
Longwood returns to action Tuesday at Wofford. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m., on ESPN+.
