FARMVILLE, Va. – Longwood field hockey lost a heartbreaker 3-2 in double overtime on Friday night against Bellarmine.
Â
Sydney Paul capped a rally for Longwood (2-7, 0-2 MAC) that saw the Lancers erase a two-goal deficit early in the fourth quarter, but Teresa Schmidt's strike in double overtime pushed Bellarmine (3-5, 1-1 MAC) past Longwood.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
Â
Longwood created chances throughout the match and outshot Bellarmine 17 to nine behind an aggressive offense that was able to earn 12 penalty corners.
Â
However, Bellarmine found a foothold in the second quarter with a goal by Peyton Hobson. Hobson banged home a rebound after a shot for an early 1-0 lead.
Â
Schmidt added a goal right before the half, but Longwood refused to go quietly.
Â
The Lancers controlled big chunks of the second half, and that sustained pressure finally paid off with
Ireland McDermott's first goal of the season. After inserting a penalty corner, McDermott snuck to the back post, and
Zoe Tierney rifled one at the cage that McDermott tipped home.
Â
Less than a minute into the fourth quarter,
Sydney Paul tied it up.
Hunter-Paige Johnson found Paul on the left side, and Paul slotted it into the back of the cage for her first goal of the season to make it 2-2.
Â
Regulation wasn't enough as the two sides stayed locked at two heading into overtime. Early in the second overtime, Schmidt put home a bouncing ball in front of the Longwood cage to end the game.
Â
WHAT THEY SAID:
Â
"It was a tough loss for us today," said Longwood Head Coach
Miranda Rigg. "It's unfortunate we had to come back from being down at the half, but I'm happy with the fight and that we were able to."
Â
"We have to reward ourselves more," Rigg added about her team's chances. The Lancers hit the post once in the match. "We had some great ball movement and possession most of the game. I'm really proud of this group and their efforts for today. We will bounce back."
