BALTIMORE, Md. – The Longwood women's soccer team played hard, but the high-powered attack of Loyola Maryland pushed the Greyhounds (5-2) past the Lancers (1-4-2) 3-1 on Sunday afternoon.
SCORING:

Brooke Bonner
33' | LU-M—Baylee DeSmit (4), assist Asma Merzougui
66' | LU-M—Baylee DeSmit (5), assist Kelly Hutton, Chloe Kuminkoski
HOW IT HAPPENED:
The two sides went back and forth early in a physical, fast match. While Delaney DeMartino struck first for Loyola University Maryland, the Lancers answered a touch more than five minutes later.
Brooke Bonner played a long ball up the field, and
Julia Gill pounced on it after it slipped through the back line. The junior slotted it into the back of the net for her first goal of the season to make it 1-1.
However, Baylee DeSmit, a preseason All-Patriot League selection, didn't let it stay that way. She scored once in the 33
rd minute and then added some insurance in the 66
th minute to send the home side to the win.
WHAT THEY SAID:
"First and foremost, Loyola is a very talented and well-coached team," said Longwood Head Coach
Todd Dyer. "Beyond that, I think it was a game of fine margins, but those margins led to goals for them, and it all adds up in the end."
"We fought hard, and we scored a goal right after conceding," Dyer added. "But we had some loose moments defensively with our shape and our discipline, and they got behind us and scored way too easily. These are things that we can fix, and we will have to with only two more games before conference play."
UP NEXT:
Longwood stays on the road this week with a trip to VMI on Thursday. Kickoff is slated for 4 p.m.
