NINETY SIX, S.C. – A pair of sophomores and a senior stepped up for Longwood men's golf, and the Lancers are headed to the Big South Championship Final Round for the first time in program history.
Scott Jordan,
Justin LaRue and
Daniel George all won their matches against Winthrop in the Big South Championship Semifinal on Wednesday morning, with LaRue providing the clinching point in a 3-2 win.
The sophomore came through in the clutch with both Longwood and Winthrop tied 2-2. But it took a little extra time. LaRue was dead even with Winthrop's Nick Mayfield after 18 holes.
Nineteen holes were not enough either, but on the 20
th hole, LaRue carded the better score to send the Lancers to the finals.
While LaRue went back and forth with Mayfield, Jordan was off to the races with a great start for an early lead. The sophomore was five up through nine holes against Winthrop's M. Hutto, and he cruised on the back nine to clinch his point with three holes to play, 4 & 3.
Meanwhile, George went back and forth early with Ian Faulconer of Winthrop. He too never trailed, but the duo traded holes over the opening nine.
However, George, a senior, closed strong. He went up two holes with five left to play, and he clinched the match on the 17
th hole by outscoring Faulconer for a 3 & 1 win.
Winthrop battled back, with W. Rogers narrowly edging
Brendan Dunphy 2 & 1, and C. Collings tied the score by narrowly edging
Nick Rakes. Their match went to the 18
th hole, but Collings won it 1UP.
For Longwood, the result sets up a showdown with Charleston Southern, the reigning Big South Champions. The two will dive into match play at 1:45 on Wednesday afternoon, with live stats available at
