Lancers Finish Strong, Roll Past Central Michigan 4-1

Obeirne's Career Day Leads Longwood in Season Finale

FARMVILLE, Va. – In their final match of the season, Longwood field hockey put together its finest performance of the regular season. The Lancers (4-14, 2-5 MAC) powered past Central Michigan 4-1 in dominant fashion.

On a day when Longwood honored its seniors, junior Cara Obeirne led the way with her best performance in her Longwood career. She had a career best three points with two goals and one assist as the Lancers dominated.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

Longwood owned the first period. The Lancers ripped off 12 shots and were crisp while holding CMU (1-15, 0-7 MAC) without a shot for the first 15 minutes.

That sharpness paved the way to an early 2-0 lead thanks to extended offensive pressure. Fittingly on senior day, a senior opened the scoring. Obeirne capped a nice tic-tac-toe sequence up the sideline with a centering pass to Kate Frey, and the senior deflected it home for a 1-0 lead.

Obeirne then snuck to the back post, and Luna Prieri found her with a slick reverse pass. Obeirne redirected it straight home for the 2-0 lead.

The two sides traded shots back and forth in the second quarter, but then Longwood stormed out of halftime to put the game to rest.

The defense held CMU without a shot for the third period, and Obeirne opened the scoring early after halftime. She tucked a tight angle shot home for a 3-0 lead, and her second goal of the match tied her career high.

Zoe Tierney also struck in the third on a penalty corner off a nice pass from Luna Prieri. Prieri took the ball at the top of the circle, drew the defense in and slipped it to Tierney. The junior didn't miss from 10 meters to take a 4-0 lead on her fourth goal of the season.

The Lancers then closed it out while. A late goal from CMU gave the final margin, but the result was never in doubt for the final 15 minutes.

WHAT THEY SAID:

"It was a great team win today," said Longwood Head Coach Miranda Rigg. "I'm really proud of the fight and constant growth through the ups and downs of the season."

"To the seniors, thank you for your work ethic, will to win, and fight for the growth of this program," Rigg added. "I wish you all the best in your future adventures. Go Wood!"
