Lancers Outshoot Radford, Hits Woodwork Twice, but Early Goal Proves Difference

RADFORD, Va. – Longwood men's soccer battled, but an early goal by Radford proved to be the difference on the road on Saturday afternoon. The Highlanders (2-10-2, 2-3 Big South) edged the Lancers (5-5-3, 0-4-1 Big South) 1-0.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

Longwood piled up shots and chances throughout, and the team controlled the pace of the match.

The Lancers had 17 shots to Radford's nine, as Longwood had seven shots in the first half before ripping 10 after halftime. Plus, Longwood hit the woodwork twice and had seven corner kicks.

However, Radford capitalized on one fortunate bounce in the 10th minute to take the lead. A long throw by the Highlanders went into the box, and the ball snuck through multiple plays and pinballed to Enjick Albert's feet for a close range shot and a 1-0 lead.

The Lancers rallied and refused to quit, as the team put five shots on target on the night with plenty of others around the woodwork (or onto it). Gonzalo Carrasco led the team with six shots, and Darcy Moffat added five more. In addition, the Lancer back line, outside of the first half goal, kept things clean, leaving only one save for Max Hinke to make. Unfortunately, the equalizer did not materialize.

WHAT THEY SAID:

"We knew what was at stake going in to this game, and we had to find goals," said Longwood Head Coach Jon Atkinson. "We threw everything but the kitchen sink at it but ultimately fell short."

"Playing the first half, we took a while to adjust to the conditions and conceded a sloppy goal, but still, at 1-0 at the half, we didn't feel that would hold once we turned the tables," Atkinson added. "We knocked many times but couldn't get the killer touch. The lads put in a decent shift, but if there was one knock against us, it was that we didn't sync as cleanly as you need and as such weren't clinical enough, leaving some big opportunities go unpunished. It's massively disappointing for all concerned, but we can't get this game back now and need to focus on the next."
