FARMVILLE, Va. – A matchup between two of the top teams in the Big South was a back and forth, entertaining affair on Wednesday night. Unfortunately for Longwood, the Lancers (4-7-4, 2-2-2 Big South) found themselves on the wrong end of the scoreboard in a 3-1 loss to Radford (9-5-1, 5-1-1 Big South).
Emma Jones had a late goal for the Lancers, but a first-half penalty kick and a crazy bounce after halftime gave Radford enough of a lead to hold on for the win.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
The match featured plenty of fireworks, and Longwood outshot Radford 15-10 as the two sides were aggressive and hungry for opportunities to score throughout the night.
However, both defenses made it difficult to get inside the 18 until a penalty kick was awarded to the Highlanders in the 37
th minute. Helena Willson put it home for a 1-0 lead.
Longwood roared back right away though, and
Karleigh Minson rifled one off the crossbar less than 30 seconds later.
After halftime, the Lancers again outshot their in-state rivals, but Radford found the back of the net early. Paige Olson hustled down the line, and
Brooke Bonner's clearance took a crazy bounce off Olson's body and into the goal from about 15 yards away.
After Radford's June Stevens added one more, Longwood refused to go away and earned a gritty goal of its own.
Emma Jones touched home a ball that pinballed around in the six to cut the lead to 3-1, but the damage had been done.
WHAT THEY SAID:
"That was a tight, combative, even game overall," said Longwood Head Coach
Todd Dyer. "But the harsh reality is that goals change games, and once they were awarded the penalty kick at the end of the first half, we were facing an uphill battle. Even after a crazy second goal, we still kept fighting and creating chances. Getting a goal back at the very end shows the grit and character of this team. Now the challenge is to bounce back and respond on the road Saturday."
UP NEXT:
Longwood heads on the road for its final two matches in the regular season. The Lancers will take on Winthrop on Saturday at 1 p.m., and the match is scheduled to air on ESPN+.
