HOW IT HAPPENED:

Longwood's (3-9) offense did not take very long to get going in this one. Isis Vrolijks quickly converted on a penalty stroke three minutes into the match, giving the Lancers an early lead. Longwood's lead grew in the 10th minute off of Sophia Loscher's second goal of the season, and the Lancers headed into the second frame with a 2-0 advantage.

However, La Salle (6-8) responded to Longwood's offensive success with a high-scoring quarter of their own. The Explorers netted three goals in the frame, including two from their leading goal scorer Tatum Johnson in under two minutes. Cat McFadden pushed one past Lara Van Nunen in the 28th minute, and the Explorers found themselves in the lead 3-2 headed into halftime.

Down by a goal to start half number two, the Lancers nearly evened the score within the first three minutes. Longwood earned a penalty corner and Floor Schouten registered three shots on goal in the sequence, but La Salle goalkeeper Ryan Curley held strong. Laura McCann added some extra insurance by scoring unassisted in the 38th minute and again in the 48th minute to give the Explorers a 5-2 lead. Schouten then knocked one past Curley late in the fourth, but it would not be enough to overcome the deficit and La Salle held on to win 5-3.

WHAT THEY SAID:

"We can't take our foot off the gas when we start strong like that," said head coach Miranda Rigg on the team's two-goal first quarter.

"We need to work on good individual defense and marking in the circle," said Rigg on Longwood's defense. "They scored a few goals today from tips that we could eliminate."

"App State is another great team, and we need to focus on our game and how we play," said Rigg on returning to conference play against App State this coming Friday.
