Lancers Fall 2-1 After Video Review Overturns Goal

LOUISVILLE, KY – The Longwood Lancers fell to the Bellarmine Knights in the team's third MAC contest this season by a score of 2-1. Floor Schouten provided the lone goal for the Lancers, while another from Madison Wiley was wiped away by video review in the third quarter.

Goals (Assists)

36' Bellarmine: Amber Hofenkjerembo
38' Longwood: Floor Schouten (Kolbey Donahue)
48' Bellarmine: Amber Hofenkjerembo

HOW IT HAPPENED:

Today's MACtion began with a closely contested first quarter. Both the Lancers (2-8) and Knights (2-8) made several great plays defensively and posted similar marks on the offensive side, with Longwood's three shots besting Bellarmine's two in the first frame.

The defensive prowess continued for both teams in the 2nd quarter. The first shot of the frame wouldn't come until under two minutes when Kate Frey's attempt was blocked, which led to a Longwood penalty corner. Nothing would result, and the score was locked 0-0 headed into halftime.

Longwood thought they had a goal early in the third from Madison Wiley, but after an official review the call on the field was overturned, and the score would remain 0-0. Shortly after, the Knights broke the tie on an Amber Hofenkjerembo tally to give Bellarmine the lead. However, Floor Schouten made sure the Knights weren't in the lead for long, notching her first goal of the season on a deflection from Kolbey Donahue to tie the match at one apiece.

Bellarmine quickly responded to start the final quarter, when Hofenkjerembo converted on a breakaway chance to put the Knights up 2-1. Longwood's offense started to generate chances late in the fourth, including three shots and a penalty corner in the final five minutes. The late offensive push was unable to generate a score, and Bellarmine walked away with the conference victory.

WHAT THEY SAID:

"We didn't let them keep scoring on us once they went up," said head coach Miranda Rigg on the Lancers' efforts defensively. "We came back and put one in and had some good attacking opportunities as well."

"Glad that our girls felt confident in the fouls they saw to ask for a review when it's a tight game," Rigg said on the use of video replay from both sides throughout the match.

"We need to be better with our fundamental skills," said Rigg. "We turn the ball over too much in transition play."
