Winthrop Snaps Longwood's Shutout Streak, Downs Lancers 1-0

Lancers' Scoreless Streak Ends at 345 Minutes as Eagles Edge Out One-Goal Win

ROCK HILL, S.C. – All good things come to an end, even Longwood's three-game shutout streak.

The Lancers (4-6-1, 2-2-0 Big South) extended their scoreless streak to 345 consecutive minutes until Winthrop's Keeley Leising snapped it with a go-ahead, second-half strike Saturday afternoon that lifted the Eagles (4-5-1, 2-2-1 Big South) to a 1-0 win at Eagle Field.

Leising's goal came in the 55th minute and was the first Longwood has allowed since 2-1 overtime defeat against Presbyterian on Sept. 21. That goal came on one of only two shots on goal Winthrop created Saturday, but it was enough to end Longwood's three-game unbeaten streak and send the Eagles to their second straight Big South victory.

The goal was the lone blemish for Longwood's defense on the day, but it was one more than Winthrop's backline allowed as the Eagles became only the fourth team to shut out Longwood this season. That effort came from a defense spearheaded by the duo of Greta Conboy and Dylan Patterson, who joined midfielder Megan Loveland in playing all 90 minutes and holding Longwood to just one shot on goal.

"We were out-coached, out-worked and out-played today," said Longwood head coach Todd Dyer. "The score and stat sheet make that pretty obvious. We did more to beat ourselves than we did to help ourselves, and that starts with me. With our bye week coming up, we simply have to find a way to be better in all areas."

The loss came just three days after Longwood took down reigning Big South Champion Radford 2-0 this past Wednesday. However, Winthrop made goals much harder to come by Saturday as Longwood starting forwards Kennedy Culbreath, Danielle Toone and Kiersten Yuhas combined to take all three of Longwood's shots with one apiece. Only Culbreath's, in the 16th minute, made it on target.

The loss is Longwood's first in regulation since American edged out a 1-0 win on Sept. 13 and drops the Lancers back to .500 in Big South play. The Lancers currently sit tied for fifth in the conference standings alongside Winthrop and one half-game behind Campbell (2-1-1) for third place.

Longwood will look to get back into a top-three spot next Saturday, Oct. 12, when USC Upstate comes to town to begin the Lancer's second-half push in the Big South schedule.
