WILMINGTON, N.C. – UNCW forward Emil Elveroth tallied his first career goal in the 71st minute and the ninth-ranked Seahawks added a late goal from Ben Fisher to help UNCW evade an upset-minded Lancers squad by a 2-0 margin Friday night at UNCW Soccer Stadium.
With the Seahawks ranked among the nation's top-15 in all three major college polls, Longwood (0-2-1) gave UNCW all it could handle in suffering its second consecutive hard-fought defeat.
"There was so many positives and another night that could have been," said Longwood head coach
Jon Atkinson. "Unfortunately, it swung on a moment we would like to take back but will learn from it."
The Longwood defense – anchored by Longwood sophomore goalkeeper
Lance Da Silva – was able to withstand the pressure until the game's final minutes from a Seahawk squad that leads the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) in goals scored throughout the early portion of the season.
A product of Halmstad, Sweden, Elveroth tallied the winner after evading the Longwood defense and beating Da Silva into the lower left corner of the goal.
With Longwood pressing for the equalizer, Fisher took a cross from Matt Gianfortone to double the Seahawk margin and give UNCW the cushion it needed.
The first half of the contest saw Longwood outshoot the CAA-power Seahawks by a 5-4 margin, with two shots on goal coming from
Mo Jalloh off the bench.
Connor Rea had possibly the Lancers best chance of the frame, forcing UNCW goalkeeper Ryan Cretens into a diving save.
"We're obviously frustrated as we went toe-to-toe with a caliber side," Atkinson said. "We had good moments in the first half that could've given us the lead and confidence to withstand a strong second half by UNCW."
Elveroth led the Seahawks with four shots, two on target, and was joined by David Lozano and Philip Goodrum with multiple shots on target.
Da Silva made four saves throughout the contest on 15 UNCW shots faced, while Cretens made two saves for the Seahawks.
Longwood looks to bounce back Tuesday, Sept. 12, as the Lancers face their second of four ACC opponents this season in NC State. First touch is set for 7 p.m., at Dail Soccer Stadium in Raleigh, N.C.
"Our best football is ahead of us as there is still a lot of areas to improve that I know we're capable of once we get that game fitness and synergy," Atkinson said.
