Asheville Takes Finale, Series From Lancers, 7-3

Osinski and McCafferty Each Pick Up Three Hits in Loss

ASHEVILLE, N.C. – Chris Troost, Justin Woods, and Brandon Lankford each drove in two runs to lead UNC Asheville past Longwood, 7-3, in the rubber match of the series Sunday at Greenwood Baseball Field.

UNC Asheville (21-28, 10-11 Big South) got key hits from a number of players, led by a 3-for-3 game by Troost. Longwood (18-32, 6-15 Big South) led briefly at 2-0 in the second, but UNC Asheville scored four runs in the next three trips to the plate to take the weekend series.

Nick Boyles (1-5) tossed 1.0 scoreless inning in relief of UNC Asheville starter Spencer Orr. Eric Whitecavage spun 1.1 innings of one-hit ball to close out the game, collecting his team-leading sixth save of the season.

Zach Potojecki (2-7) suffered the loss after allowing four runs on seven hits and two walks in 5.1 innings. Potojecki, who entered the weekend tied with teammate Cody Wager in strikeouts to lead the Big South, struck out seven batters, marking his sixth seven-strikeout game of the season.

Michael Osinski and Mac McCafferty each picked up three hits in the loss. The two juniors each doubled in the game, McCafferty driving in a pair of runs on a two-run single in the second inning that put Longwood ahead, 2-0, in the second inning.

Thanks to Presbyterian sweeping Charleston Southern (21-26, 9-15 Big South) the Lancers have life in the race for the postseason. Longwood must sweep Campbell (23-28, 8-13 Big South) to finish in an eighth-place tie with Charleston Southern, who the Lancers took two of three from in the regular season.

Longwood concludes its season with a three-game set at Campbell that begins Friday. First pitch at Campbell is set for 6 p.m. at Jim Perry Stadium.
