BUIES CREEK, N.C. – A three-hit, three RBI game from Campbell senior outfielder Ben Calvano backed a quality start by junior right-handed pitcher Allan Winans as Campbell took the first game of a three-game weekend series from Longwood, 9-4, Thursday night at Jim Perry Stadium.
Calvano was 3-for-4 at the plate and finished a homer shy of the cycle to lead Campbell (24-29, 9-13 Big South) to the game one victory. The loss for the Lancers (18-33, 6-16 Big South) knocks the Lancers out of postseason contention.
Calvano, Kyle Mehl, and Jeff Hahs each picked up multiple hits in the game for Campbell, while Drew Butler added a pair of RBI in a 1-for-5 game at the plate. Campbell struck for five runs in the eighth inning to turn what was a 4-2 lead into a 9-2 advantage.
Winans (4-6) scattered six hits across 6.2 innings of work, holding Longwood to two runs, one earned Thursday. Harry Thomas tossed the final 2.1 innings to pick up his second save of the season.
Cody Wager (4-5) battled, but was hit with the loss in his final scheduled start. The senior went out with a quality start, his team-leading sixth quality start of the season. Wager allowed four runs, just two earned, in 6.0 innings of work with nine strikeouts. Wager, the Big South leader in strikeouts, has 91 punchouts on the year.
Antwaun Tucker,
Justin Mitchell, and
Sammy Miller each had two-hit games, while
Brandon Harvell reached safely with a pair of walks.
Tucker, the reigning Big South Freshman of the Week, extended his hitting streak to a career-best 11 games. The longest hitting streak of the season for the Lancers stays alive with the freshman outfielder going 2-for-4 with an RBI and one walk in the game.
Longwood continues its three-game series at Campbell Friday afternoon. Sophomore southpaw
Steven Farkas (2-2, 2.70 ERA) is expected to get the ball for the Lances, opposite of Campbell right-handed starter Ryan Kirk (3-6, 4.89 ERA). First pitch is set for 3 p.m. at Jim Perry Stadium.
