Major Keys Reigning Champ Asheville Past Longwood

Reigning Big South Player of the Year Chatori Major Scores 26 in Asheville’s 84-53 Win

ASHEVILLE, N.C. – Reigning Big South Player of the Year Chatori Major led a three-point shooting barrage that saw UNC Asheville drain 10 triples en route to an 84-53 win over visiting Longwood Saturday afternoon inside Kimmel Arena.

Major scored 13 of her game-high 26 points in the opening quarter, including 10 of Asheville's first 12 points of the game to spur the Bulldogs on a game-opening 12-0 run. For the game, Major hit six of Asheville's 10 three-pointers, as her and Jessica Wall combined for eight treys. Major's three-point shooting barrage was six of nine shots the senior hit in the game, as she added an assist and a block in 30 minutes.

Major was aided by 14 points from Jessica Wall, while Bronaza Fitzgerald finished one rebound shy of a double-double with 13 points, nine boards. KJ Weaver added nine points, along with 13 rebounds.

Major's performance offset a career-high 16 points from Longwood's Micaela Ellis. A product of Oak Park, Mich., Ellis scored in double figures for the third time in four games, as she's averaging 11.3 points over the stretch. In addition, her five assists led to 11 Longwood points.

With her five assists, Ellis moves to within 12 assists shy of moving into the top 10 in the program's single season assists charts. Ellis has secured at least three assists in 18 games this season, while accumulating at least five in eight games.

Sophomore Kemari Jones also finished in double figures, scoring 12 points, along with a rebound, steal and block in 29 minutes.

With the win, the reigning Big South champion Bulldogs (12-13, 6-8 Big South) snap a four-game losing skid. Meanwhile, Longwood (4-21, 1-13 Big South) drops its second straight and 10th straight away from Willett Hall.

Weaver's 13 rebounds for Asheville helped the Bulldogs to a 43-19 rebounding advantage and held Longwood to just three offensive rebounds as a team. It marks the second straight meeting that Asheville has owned the boards against the Lancers, winning the rebounding battle by a 55-20 margin during the matchup in Farmville.

After playing one game on the road, Longwood returns to Willett Hall Tuesday, Feb. 21 to host Liberty. That game is set for a 7 p.m., opening tip.
