Mary Washington Cuts Deficit to Top Longwood, 5-2

The Eagles overcome Longwood’s First Spring Doubles Point Under Coach Tafelski

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – Despite Longwood's first doubles point win this spring and junior Florian Uffer's second straight singles win this spring, Mary Washington stormed back with five singles wins to top the Lancers, 5-2, Saturday at the Mary Washington Tennis Center.

After Longwood's duo of Alfonso Castellano and Julian Farthing defeated Mary Washington's Stratton Gilmore and Brandon Griffin at the No. 1, Uffer and Lachlan Manser teamed up for an 8-6 victory over Mary Washington Eric Hurwitz and Patrick Hughes to give the Lancers (1-2) their first spring doubles point under coach Pierre Tafelski.

"We competed very well in doubles but couldn't capitalize on the momentum we had in singles," said Tafelski. "I believe this team is heading in the right direction and the work we put in each day is starting to show, but we need to fix a few little things to have more success in our matches going forward."

The Lancers took a 2-1 lead over the Eagles, as Uffer defeated Griffin, 6-3, 6-2, to pick up his second singles win and remain unbeaten at the No. 2 position in the 2016 calendar year. Mary Washington senior Gilmore beat Castellano in No. 1 singles to give the Eagles their first point of the day.

Mary Washington overcame the deficit with a pair of wins from David Lunding-Johannson and Derek Hagino to take the lead for the remainder of the match. Johannson beat Longwood senior Bharani Sankar, 6-2, 6-1, at the No. 3 spot.

Longwood freshman Julian Farthing battled in an attempt to regain the lead for the Lancers, but Mary Washington's own freshman Derek Hagino withstood the fight en route to a 7-6, 6-3 victory over Farthing in No. 4 singles.

The Eagles earned the match victory after Patrick Hughes defeated Longwood sophomore Lachlan Manser, 6-1, 6-3, at the No. 5 flight. Mary Washington's fifth and final singles victory came when Matt Miles beat Longwood junior Rosen Ilchev in No. 6 singles.

Longwood will next face UNC Charlotte in a neutral-site match taking place at Coastal Carolina in Conway, S.C., Saturday, Feb. 13. The match is set to start at 12 p.m.
