WASHINGTON – Looking to overcome a three-goal first half deficit, Longwood scored a pair of goals in the game's final 10 minutes and
Lauren Bernard made a season-high nine saves, but Georgetown held on for a 4-2 win Sunday afternoon at Cooper Field.
The loss for the Lancers (6-5) derails a two-game win streak for the squad on the road and marks the second straight loss for Longwood overall. Meanwhile, Georgetown (4-8) picks up their second win in the last three games.
"It's probably one of our more disappointing performances," said Longwood head coach
Iain Byers. "We had a really sluggish first half and didn't deal very well with the different surface."
Bernard made a season-high nine saves in the loss. It marks the fifth game this season for Bernard making six or more saves, including four of the past seven contests.
Longwood looked to piece together a rally in the game's late stages, as
Abbey Ripley and Verstraete scored three minutes apart in the game's final 10 minutes. From there, Longwood had a pair of late chances but was unable to convert and cut further into the Georgetown lead.
Verstaete scored a goal and added an assist to mark her fifth game in Longwood's last six contests with three-plus points. The goal for Verstraete marked her 11th of the season, as the Utrecht, Netherlands product netted her eighth goal in her last six games.
Meanwhile, Ripley's mark in the 61st minute marked the second goal in the last three contests. Ripley has come on strong of late, scoring all three of her goals this season in Longwood's last six games.
Megan Parsons provided a goal and an assist in the first half, as the Hoyas took a 3-0 lead. Parsons scored the game's first goal, as she redirected a shot from Katie Maransky from the top of the circle. Less than eight minutes later, Parsons assisted on a play where she fed the ball to Helena Masiello on a penalty corner, who fired a shot from the top of the circle.
Georgetown scored the final goal of the frame two minutes before the half, as Lindsay Getz connected on a tic-tac-toe passing play setup by Maria McDonald and Aliyah Graves-Brown.
Longwood continues a stretch of three straight games on the road, as the squad heads to Oxford, Ohio for a game at Miami (OH). That contest is set for Friday, Oct. 7, beginning at 4:30 p.m.
"It gives us a lot to work on during the Miami game, but we're excited to get to work this week and get ready for a conference game so we can show our mettle," Byers said.
