HARRISONBURG, Va. – James Madison's Tim Estermann tallied the game-winning goal in the 109th minute, leading the Dukes to a 2-1 win over Longwood Wednesday night at Sentara Park.
The Dukes scored a pair of second-half goals to overcome a 1-0 halftime deficit against a Longwood team playing its third game in five days. With two of those three games on the road, Longwood spread minutes throughout its lineup with 16 players receiving 25 or more minutes of playing time.
"I feel for the lads, as they were put in a tough position to play as many games in such a short turnaround," said Longwood head coach
Jon Atkinson. "We were a minute away from a credible result against at JMU that's much better than what their record suggests."
In its first meeting since 2011, James Madison (2-9-3) scored an equalizer on a late penalty kick goal, before Estermann scored the game-winner to send Longwood (5-9-1) to its fifth loss in one-goal games this season.
"Our work rate deserved more from tonight in a very choppy game, where I felt we were on the wrong end of important decisions," Atkinson said.
Lance Da Silva received the start in goal for the Lancers, making a season-high seven saves in the contest against 20 shots against.
Freshman
Max Poelker scored his team-leading sixth of the season, as Longwood scored the first goal of the contest in the 42nd minute. After settling a throw-in from Campos, Poelker was able to turn and rifle a shot past James Madison goalkeeper Kyle Morton.
Of his six goals this season, five have been assisted by Campos or senior midfielder
Finnlay Wyatt with Campos and Wyatt claiming assists on two of those tallies.
The assist for Campos marked his ninth helper of the year, as he moved to second-place in the NCAA in assists this season. A product of Bergen, Norway, Campos has assisted on nine of Longwood's 23 goals this season and has added two or more assists in two contests.
James Madison's Aaron Ward-Baptiste tallied the game-tying goal off a penalty kick to send the game into overtime. After Longwood was forced to finish the game with 10 men after
Eoin O Donovan was sent off, Estermann scored the game-winning goal off a counter attack.
"While we started slow, I felt we had the upper hand for the majority that followed," Atkinson said. "Losing a man only made our challenge harder and while pushing for the win, we lost our discipline."
Morton made one save against six Longwood shots.
"We'll regroup from this game, have some down time and recovery, before we get ready for Radford," Atkinson said.
Following its stretch of three games in five days, Longwood will have a week to prepare for 25th-ranked Radford, who the Lancers welcome to the Athletics Complex Wednesday, Oct. 26 with kickoff slated for 6 p.m.
