McNamara’s Two Goals Lift VCU Past Longwood, 3-1

VCU Forward Emily McNamara Tallied Five Points With Two Goals, Assist

FARMVILLE, Va. – A five-point night from VCU forward Emily McNamara, including two goals and an assist, led the Rams past Longwood, 3-1, Wednesday night at the Longwood Athletics Complex.

McNamara tallied two goals in the second half, including the game winner that came off a penalty corner in the 49th minute. The game-winning goal gave VCU the lead, six minutes after Longwood's Edel Nyland scored an equalizer.

The unassisted goal from Nyland – her team-leading 13th of the season – came minutes after VCU took the initial lead, less than two minutes after the half. A product of Tipperary, Ireland, Nyland scored her first goal in the last five games, as she has tallied points in the last two Longwood contests.

The loss for the Lancers marks their fifth straight to fall to 6-8, as Wednesday marked the final non-conference game of the regular season. Meanwhile, the Rams improve to 4-8.

"We have to be disappointed in our performance," said Longwood head coach Iain Byers. "Our stat line said that we probably should've won the game, but we have to get learn from this moving forward."

With Longwood pressing for a late game equalizer, Leonie Verstraete had the best opportunity off a penalty corner, but her shot was saved by Chelsea Kowinurko. That shot from Verstraete was one of a team-leading five shots on the night for the Utrecht, Netherlands product.

McNamara, who registered a game-high six shots, scored her second goal of the game off a penalty corner with just over a minute left in regulation.

Kowinurko made nine saves for VCU, as Longwood posted 10 shots on goal and outshot the Rams by a 17-9 margin. Eight of Kowinurko's nine stops came in the first half. Meanwhile, Lauren Bernard made five saves in the loss.

"We have three MAC games to finish our schedule," Byers said. "We have plenty of hockey left, but we have to find a way to score goals."

Longwood concludes the regular season with three straight conference games with two of those three games at the Athletics Complex. The first of those home games will come against Ohio Sunday, Oct. 16, with a 12 p.m., start time.
