Lancers Roll VMI 3-0 For Third Shutout

Longwood Cruises to Road Win over Keydets on Strength of Three First-Half Goals

LEXINGTON, Va. – Backed by first-half goals from junior Amanda Spencer and freshmen Amber Hodges and Kathryn Miller, Longwood cruised to a 3-0 shutout over VMI Tuesday afternoon at Patchin Field.

The shutout over the Keydets (1-4-0) continued a trend of defensive dominance for the Lancers (3-3-0), who have allowed more than one goal in just one of six games this season.

"That's a VMI team that has played in a lot of tight games against tough competition this season," said Longwood head coach Todd Dyer. "To come out strong and score three goals in the first half on the road like that says a lot about what this team can do when we're playing well."

The three goals were a season high for the Lancers, who saw their early scoring onslaught sparked when Spencer found the back of the net just 4:59 into the game. Spencer, Longwood's active scoring leader with 18 career goals, took advantage of a Keydet misplay in front of the net and fired it in from 15 yards out for her second goal of the season and Longwood's earliest score of the year.

Longwood freshmen Amber Hodges and Kathryn Miller followed with back-to-back goals in the 31st and 35th minutes to extend the lead to 3-0 before halftime. It was the second goal of the season for Hodges and the first for Miller, giving Longwood four of its eight goals this season from freshmen.

The three early goals were the culmination of 90 minutes of possession control for Longwood, which allowed VMI just one shot on goal en route to the team's third shutout of the season. The Keydets managed just two shots during the entire second half, both off target, leading to senior Hailey Machen's fifth career shutout.

"The icing on the cake is earning the shutout, so that's a credit to our team for committing and concentrating on that side of the ball," said Dyer.

The win gives Longwood momentum heading into the final stretch of a five-game road swing, which concludes with away matchups at West Virginia on Sept. 13 and at Richmond on Sept. 20. The Lancers return to the Longwood Athletics Complex Sept. 23 for the Big South opener against High Point at 7 p.m.
