Burris Lifts Longwood to OT Win at Davidson, 2-1

Jennifer Burris Notches Fifth Game-Winning Goal of Career

DAVIDSON, N.C. –  Longwood senior Jennifer Burris scored the game-winning goal less than two minutes into overtime to lead Longwood to a 2-1 comeback victory over Davidson Sunday at Carol Grotness Belk Turf Field.

Longwood (2-4, 0-1 MAC) came back from a 1-0 first-half deficit and battled Davidson (3-4, 1-0 A-10) to a 1-1 draw through regulation before Burris netted the game-winner just 1:42 into the extra period. The goal was Burris' fourth of the season, the fifth game-winner of her career and gave the Lancers their second win in the past three games.

"It's always a tough game against Davidson," said Longwood head coach Iain Byers. "They always play us very well, and every year we play them tight. The thing we feel good about the most is the overtime win. We've had tough luck in overtime in the last couple games, so to get that monkey off our back is great. We're happy we got the win and look forward to next game against Central Michigan."

Burris' golden goal came on the first shot of overtime, set up by a pass from junior captain Ellen Ross. It lifted the Lancers to their first overtime win since a 2-1 victory over Vermont on Sept. 27, 2014, snapping a streak of two straight extra-time losses.

"It's always a tough game playing our ex-conference team Davidson," Burris said. "Going into overtime, we had the mindset that we had to win the game and break the curse, so to say. It was definitely a hard-fought game, but we got the result and that's all that matters. We're looking forward to trying to get a conference win against Central Michigan Friday."

Burris has now scored in back-to-back games and in four of Longwood's six games overall. Her 24 goals puts her within two scores of cracking Longwood's top 10 on the career scoring list.

Meanwhile, Longwood goalkeeper Lauren Bernard allowed just one Davidson goal on the three shots she faced, keeping pace with Davidson netminder Emily Lethan who made three saves on 12 Longwood shots through regulation. The victory was the first of the season for Bernard, who has drawn Longwood's last two starts and allowed only three goals during that 140-plus minutes of action.

The lone goal Bernard allowed came from Davidson's Melissa Funsten, who opened the scoring with under four minutes remaining in the first half. The goal was Funsten's fifth of the season and came on an assist from Lucy Pidcock.

Longwood sophomore Edel Nyland responded shortly after the start of the second half, however, unleashing the equalizer past Letham from the top of the circle for her second goal of the season.

The Lancers dominated after Nyland's goal, outshooting the Wildcats by a 5-2 margin for the remaining portion of the second half before Burris ended the game with her sudden-death goal in overtime.

The Lancers will look to keep the momentum going Friday as the squad returns to the Longwood Athletics Complex to host Mid-American Conference foe Central Michigan at 1 p.m.
