CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Megan Baltzell added two home runs and became the first player in school history to reach the 70 career home run milestone, as Longwood dropped a pair of games in walk-off fashion against Virginia Tuesday evening at The Park.
Virginia earned the win in game one on an error, 7-6, before Heidi Velk hit a three-run blast in the nightcap to give the Cavaliers a 6-4 win and complete the sweep.
"It was a disappointing day for us," said head coach
Kathy Riley. "We played two games that I felt like we had opportunities and just weren't able to convert. It wasn't just one phase of the game. Pitching we gave up a lot of home runs. All the way through the lineup, we just weren't making it difficult enough on pitchers to get us out. We had several opportunities with runners in scoring position and we just couldn't come through."
Baltzell clubbed her 20th home run of the season, marking the second time in her illustrious career she has hit at least 20 home runs. The other season came in 2013 when she led the NCAA with 30 longballs. She is also third among active players in the NCAA.
Baltzell also took the lead in the race between her and Coastal Carolina's Kory Hayden to become the Big South's all-time home run leader. With her two homers, she now has 61 in her three seasons in the Big South, compared to 59 in four seasons for Hayden.
Emily Murphy also hit a pair of home runs, as she is now second on the team with eight round-trippers this season.
In the circle,
Elizabeth McCarthy (16-12) took both losses. She posted a combined nine strikeouts in the two games, eclipsing her strikeout total of 145 last season. Her new mark of 153 strikeouts sits fourth in the single season record books, while her 298 combined strikeouts ties her with teammate
Libby Morris for fifth all-time in program history.
With the pair of wins, Virginia improves to 15-33 on the season, while Longwood falls to 20-23.
Longwood returns to action Thursday with a doubleheader at Norfolk State. First pitch from NSU Softball Stadium is set for 5 p.m.
"We look forward to playing Norfolk State tomorrow and getting back on the right foot," Riley said.
