Curry Sends Colonials Past Lancers, 2-0

George Washington’s Oliver Curry Notched a Goal and an Assist on the Day

WASHINGTON – George Washington forward Oliver Curry provided a goal and an assist, as the Colonials scored a pair of second half goals less than a minute apart en route to a 2-0 victory over visiting Longwood Tuesday afternoon at the Mount Vernon Athletic Complex.

The Lancers (5-6-0, 1-2-0 BSC) dropped their third straight match to fall under the .500 mark for the first time this season. Meanwhile, George Washington improves to 7-5-0 with the win.

Longwood was unable to get on the board despite carrying the play and holding a 4-3 shot advantage in the opening half. The Lancers had a pair of prime scoring chances in the opening half, as seniors Zach Crandall and Christian Keilty each walked in on goal, before George Washington goalkeeper Thor Arne Hofs turned away the pair of Lancer forwards each time.

"We had a very good first 45 minutes and every opportunity to go in at half ahead, but their goalkeeper did his part," said Longwood head coach Jon Atkinson.

The Colonials came out firing in the second 45 minutes. Five of the first seven shots of the half came from the home side, including the game's two goals.

"After the break, we seemed to lose some impetus and the pendulum swung allowing George Washington a way back, which they took," Atkinson said.

Curry, a 5-9, 140-pound midfielder from Santa Monica, Calif., scored his first goal of the season in the 65th minute to give the home side a 1-0 lead. He took a pass from Alastair Berry on the left side of the 18-yard box, before sending a shot past Longwood goalkeeper Carl Carpenter..

Just 56 seconds later, Curry set up teammate Christian Lawal on a cross, as Lawal headed the ball past Longwood goalkeeper Carl Carpenter and into the back of the net. The goal for Lawal marked his fourth of the season for the Colonials.

"Goals change the complexion of every game and today was no different," Atkinson said.

The shutout for Arne Hofs is his second of the season, as well as the fourth clean sheet posted by a Colonial goalkeeper. Arne Hofs made two saves throughout the afternoon, while Carpenter recorded five saves on the day for the Lancers.

"While we're disappointed, there was enough in the game to suggest we can get back to winning ways," Atkinson said.

Longwood returns to Big South play Friday, Oct. 16, as the squad welcomes Presbyterian to the Athletics Complex. Kickoff is set for 6 p.m.
