FARMVILLE, Va. – Longwood freshman
Edel Nyland scored two goals in her collegiate debut to lead Longwood past Appalachian State, 4-3, in a preseason matchup Monday afternoon at the Athletics Complex.
Nyland took a team-high six of Longwood's 14 shots on the day and scored at the 2:49 mark in the first period and the 72:48 mark in overtime. The Lancers led the Mountaineers 3-2 at the end of regulation and scored the first goal of the predetermined overtime period. Longwood and Appalachian State then squared off in a shootout, which Longwood won 5-4 after scoring on its final four attempts.
"It's good to get a game under our belt," said head coach
Iain Byers. "Four days into preseason, we've worked on a lot of things and we saw them all in the game today. We saw a start of where the team is going to go this season and we still have a lot to work on, but to come away with a win is nice."
Sophomore
Lauren Bernard made the start in goal for Longwood allowing two goals in her 69 minutes of action. Bernard was relieved by redshirt-freshman
Allison Savage who yielded a single goal in just over 10 minutes. The two keepers rotated in the penalty shootout with each making three saves on five attempts.
Junior
Jennifer Burris added a goal and an assist while freshman
Keaton Busser tallied a goal in her collegiate debut. Sophomores
Jordan Chapman,
Rachel Lombardi and
Lindsey Lysher each recorded a single assist in the victory.
Longwood returns to action Saturday, Aug. 23 at Richmond for its final preseason match. The Lancers will open their regular season on Aug. 30 against Holy Cross in Lowell, Mass.
