Longwood Hosts Ball State on Senior Night

FARMVILLE, Va.-Longwood hits the turf for its final home game of the season against Ball State Friday at 7 p.m. at the Athletics Complex. The Lancers will recognize their two seniors, Jessica Diaz and Kelley Fay, prior to the game.

What's at Stake

Longwood is in all-but a must-win scenario if the Lancers are to make the Mid-American Conference Championships. The Lancers sit sixth in the standings at 1-3 in conference play and have two MAC games remaining. In all likelihood, Longwood needs to finish 3-3 to a shot at postseason play.

Climbing Cardinals

Ball State had quite the week leading up to its arrival in Farmville. The Cardinals defeated Missouri State 5-0 to earn their first MAC win and took down no. 20 Michigan State 2-1 in overtime. The Cardinals are coached by fifth-year leader Beth Maddox. Maddox has Ball State sitting fourth in the MAC at 1-1, currently occupying the final playoff spot.

Look for Lexi Kavanaugh to lead the offensive effort for Ball State. Kavanaugh usually comes off the bench, but leads the Cardinals with six goals on the year. Two other players to keep an eye on are Bethany Han and Tori Widrick. Han has four goals and three assists while Widrick has gone for three goals and four helpers.

Senior Day

Longwood will honor a pair of seniors in Jessica Diaz and Kelley Fay on Friday night.

Diaz has been a force in attack since her freshman year. Jessie has played in 63 games to this point of her career, notching 42 starts. Her 25 career goals are one shy of moving into a tie for 10th all-time in program history.

Fay has played in 68 games throughout her time in Farmville. Fay has been a stalwart defender and an anchor along the back line especially for the past two seasons. The senior has started all 36 games in the past two years.

Next Up

Longwood travels to Philadelphia, Pa. Sunday to take on the Penn Quakers. The matchup is the first between the two schools in field hockey.
