CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The Longwood University field hockey team dropped a 5-1 decision at the second-ranked University of North Carolina of the Atlantic Coast Conference on Wednesday evening in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. Junior Kaity Byrum|Suffolk (Lakeland) scored the lone goal for the Lancers (3-6) against the Tar Heels (7-1) in a match that was delayed 45 minutes due to lightning. Longwood returns to action on Saturday, September 24, when it hosts Liberty University at 12 p.m. at the Athletics Complex in Farmville.

North Carolina scored its first goal in the 19th minute and another in the 22nd minute before Byrum scored on a penalty corner on a ball set up by senior Sarah Bietsch|Chambersburg, Pa. (Chambersburg Area) in the 26th minute to cut the lead to 2-1. The Tar Heels scored in the 28th minute to lead 3-1 at halftime, then added two goals in the first nine minutes of the second half to push the advantage to 5-1.

The Tar Heels outshot Longwood 27-3 and had a 13-2 advantage in penalty corners. Junior goalkeeper Kaye Goulding|Tickhill, England (Wakefield Girls) recorded 12 saves, her third match this season with double-digit saves. Four different players scored for UNC, led by Kelsey Kolojejchick with two goals and one assist. Sassi Ammer played 36:21 in goal and allowed one goal with one save, while Caitlin Powers was in the cage for the remaining minutes and recorded one save.
