Kaye Goulding|Tickhill, England (Wakefield Girls) recorded the shutout victory. Longwood returns to action on Sunday, August 28, when it hosts Lock Haven University of the Atlantic 10 Conference at 1 p.m. at the Athletics Complex in Farmville.
The Lancers jumped out to an early 1-0 lead after Babineau tipped a pass from senior
Alison Akers|Virginia Beach (First Colonial) from the right side and scored. The Lancers held the Tigers without a shot on goal over the final 20 minutes of the half to lead 1-0 at halftime.
Both teams had multiple penalty corner opportunities in the second half, but the defenses held firm to keep the score 1-0 until the 70th minute.
Brittany Diaz scored an insurance goal for the Lancers after she stole a pass at midfield and took the ball down the field and flipped it over the advancing goalkeeper to make the final score 2-0.
Longwood outshot Towson 11-7 while the Tigers had an 8-4 edge in penalty corners.
The Lancers were paced by Babineau and
Brittany Diaz with one goal each, while
Alison Akers added one assist. Freshman
Jessica Diaz|Chesapeake (Western Branch) attempted a game-high four shots, while Goulding recorded four saves in the shutout.
Towson was led by Katie DeFilippo with three shots while Christina Siwiec recorded three saves and allowed two goals in 70 minutes in the cage.
