RICHMOND, Va. -- Longwood University battled to a season-opening 0-0 women's soccer overtime tie on the road at the University of Richmond of the Atlantic 10 Conference Friday night at Robins Stadium in Richmond. The Lancers (0-0-1) and Spiders (0-0-1) played evenly through 90 minutes of regulation and the first of two 10-minute extra periods before the contest ended at the decision of the match officials due to weather concerns. Richmond had three shots on goal during the opening half, but junior keeper
Kyra Byron|Richmond (Mills E. Godwin) stopped each attempt. Longwood pressured to start the second half and had three scoring opportunities during the first five minutes but two were saved and the other blocked. The Spiders placed three more attempts on goal during the period, but Byron stopped all three. Each team had late opportunities that were saved by the respective keepers, and Byron stopped yet another scoring chance by UR during the OT. The second 10-minute additional period was less than a minute in when stopped due to lightning in the area.
"It was a physical battle but we were expecting that," said 18th-year head coach
Todd Dyer '93. "Richmond is an athletic, strong, fast team but we dealt with that very well defensively and most of their shots were from distance, and I thought we had the three best scoring opportunities in the game. To get a shutout on the road against such a quality program is definitely a good building block for us we move ahead to Sunday."
Richmond took a 21-9 advantage in shots, though only 8-3 in attempts on-goal, while the Spiders had a 5-0 edge on corner kicks. Senior captain
Kacie Oliver|Portsmouth, R.I. (Portsmouth) and sophomore
Kelsey Pardue|Henrico (Hermitage) each had two shots with one on goal to lead Longwood. Byron played the duration in front of the net for the Lancers with eight saves and no goals allowed. Andrea Young played the duration for UR with three saves and no goals allowed.
It was the sixth meeting in six years between the two schools in the sport of women's soccer as Richmond continues to lead the all-time series at 3-1-2.
