FARMVILLE, Va. - The Longwood University field hockey team claimed third place in the 2011 Northern Pacific Field Hockey Conference (NorPac) Tournament with a 1-0 double-overtime victory over Davidson College on Saturday afternoon in Stanford, California. Sophomore Stacey de Grandhomme|Cape Town, South Africa (Table View) scored the match-winner in the 89th minute for the Lancers against the Wildcats (11-9). Junior Amy Lewis|Lewisville, N.C. (Forsyth Country Day) made a career-high nine saves, including a stop on a penalty stroke, while playing the final 53:36 in goal. de Grandhomme earned a spot on the NorPac All-Tournament Team for her play in the three matches. Longwood ends the season with a 13-9 overall record, the most wins since 2000, and the first winning season under head coach Iain Byers.

Longwood dominated possession in the first half, outshooting Davidson 18-3. de Grandhomme had an open look early, but Christine Rua made the defensive save for the Wildcats in the third minute. The Lancers peppered the goal, but Davidson made 11 saves in the period as the teams went into halftime scoreless. Junior goalkeeper Kaye Goulding|Tickhill, England (Wakefield Girls) made two saves in the first half for the Lancers.

Lewis replaced Goulding in the cage at halftime. The Wildcats were more aggressive offensively in the second half and outshot the Lancers 9-6. Lewis made six saves in the second half. Freshman Charlotte De Waegeneer|Brussels, Belgium (Sint-Jan Berchmanscollege) made a defensive save on a rebound shot attempt by the Wildcats to keep the score tied at 0-0.

In the first overtime period, Lewis made a stop on a penalty stroke by Gray Robinson to preserve the shutout. The Wildcats outshot Longwood 4-0 in the first overtime. In the second overtime, senior Rachel Akers|Virginia Beach (First Colonial) had a shot sail wide in the 87th minute. Davidson's Finley Amato attempted a pair of shots in a 30-second stretch, but Lewis made one save and the other attempt went wide. The Lancers scored the match-winner at 88:36 when de Grandhomme received the ball at the top of the circle from Rachel Akers on a penalty corner and quickly sent a blistering shot into the cage for the victory.

Longwood outshot Davidson 26-18, including 15-12 in shots on goal, and had an 8-6 advantage in penalty corners. de Grandhomme attempted a match-high five shots with four shots on goal, while seniors Amanda Babineau|Stafford (Mountain View), Olga Knop|Berlin, Germany (Werner-von-Siemens-Gymnasium) and Lauren Sullivan|Fredericksburg (Stafford) each attempted four shots. Lewis made a career-high nine saves while playing the final 53:36 in goal. Davidson was led by Annie Evans, Amato and Rua with three shots each. Sarah Fisher made 12 saves while playing the duration in goal.
