BOONE, N.C. - The Longwood University field hockey team topped Northern Pacific Field Hockey Conference (NorPac) foe Appalachian State University 3-0 on Sunday afternoon in Boone, North Carolina. Junior Christina Verhulst|Yorktown (Grafton) scored the match-winner in the 35th minute before freshman Jessica Diaz|Chesapeake (Western Branch) and senior Lauren Sullivan|Fredericksburg (Stafford) added insurance goals in the second half for the Lancers (6-7, 2-1 NorPac) against the Mountaineers (1-9, 1-2 NorPac). Junior goalkeeper Kaye Goulding|Tickhill, England (Wakefield Girls) recorded five saves in the shutout victory. Longwood returns to action on Thursday, October 6, when it faces the University of the Pacific at 3:30 p.m. in Richmond. Despite being a Norpac member, the match will be a non-conference match.

Longwood's first five shots of the match were off-target, but Verhulst broke through and scored from the right side from 13 yards out at 34:59. Goulding made three saves in the first half as the Lancers led 1-0 at halftime. Jessica Diaz added an insurance goal at 56:46 as she tipped a rebound from a shot by senior Alison Akers|Virginia Beach (First Colonial). Sullivan scored her second goal of the season when she took a pass from sophomore Stacey de Grandhomme|Cape Town, South Africa (Table View) and scored from 10 yards out at 65:37.

Appalachian State outshot Longwood 12-9 and had a 10-2 advantage in penalty corners. Sullivan attempted a team-high two shots while seven others attempted one shot. Goulding recorded five saves in 70 minutes for her second shutout of the season. The Mountaineers were led by Brooklyn Shearer and Brooke Angellella with three shots each. Bridgette Street made two saves while playing the duration in goal.
