FARMVILLE, Va. - The Longwood University field hockey fell to #10 Duke University of the Atlantic Coast Conference 2-0 on Saturday afternoon at the Athletics Complex in Farmville. Sophomore goalkeeper Kaye Goulding | Tickhill, England (Wakefield Girls) had six saves on the day. Mary Nielson scored both of the Duke goals in a three-minute span near the end of the first half that proved to be the difference. Longwood (1-2) returns to action on Tuesday, September 7, when they face Wake Forest University at 7 p.m. in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.

“It is always challenging to play an ACC opponent,” said third-year head coach Iain Byers. “We played with heart and determination and we got a result that is much better than last year. I believe there is much more to come from this team and we'll work to get there.”

Duke (2-1) started the game attacking and kept the pressure on throughout. Nielson scored the Blue Devils' first goal in the 25th minute after collecting a loose ball in front of the net and slipping it past the diving goalkeeper. Nielson struck again in the 27th minute on a penalty corner to put Duke ahead 2-1.

Duke outshot Longwood 20-1 and had a 12-1 advantage in penalty corners. Sophomore Taylor Bender | Harrisburg, Pa. (Central Dauphin) had the only shot for Longwood on a breakaway down the left side that went just wide of the cage. Junior Olga Knop | Berlin, Germany (Werner-von-Siemens-Gymnasium) had two defensive saves while junior Rachel Akers | Virginia Beach (First Colonial) was credited with one defensive save.
