Longwood Splits Doubleheader At Saint Peter's; Lancers Win Opener 13-7, Fall In Nightcap 8-4

JERSEY CITY, N.J. -- Longwood University split a baseball doubleheader on the road at Saint Peter's University of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Thursday in Jersey City, New Jersey. The Lancers (27-19) won the first game 13-7 on the strength of two hits and three RBI each from senior Casey Havers/Thorofare, N.J. (West Deptford) and sophomore Dustin Sollars/Midlothian (Cosby). The Peacocks (17-33) won the second game 8-4 to earn the split of the two games. Longwood and Saint Peter's will play another doubleheader on Friday, May 21, in New Jersey beginning at 1 p.m..

In the opener, Longwood had control from the beginning and scored two runs in the first, one run in the third, two runs in the fourth, three runs in both the fifth and sixth, and two more runs in the seventh. In the first, Havers (2-3, 3 RBI) got it started with a two-run home run to right field for this third homer this season. In the second, senior Robbie Bailey/Mechanicsville (Hanover) (3-3, RBI) provided a run-scoring single. In the fourth, sophomore Robby Newman/Virginia Beach (Salem) (1-2, 2 RBI) hit a two-run home run to left center for his eighth homer this year. In the fifth, Sollars (2-3, 3 RBI) hit a three-run home run to left for his second homer this season. In the sixth, Bailey walked and later scored on a throwing error before senior Phil Cerreto/Midlothian (Midlothian) (1-3, 2 RBI) delivered a sacrifice fly RBI, and classmate David Smiy Jr./Chesterfield (Matoaca) (2-4, RBI) added an RBI infield single. In the seventh, Havers contributed a sacrifice fly RBI and Cerreto had a run-scoring single. Junior Brant Jones/Richmond (Monacan) (2-4) also had two hits for the Lancers.

Junior Chris Briere/Midlothian (James River) (6-5) took the pitching win for Longwood with the first 4.0-plus innings, scattering six hits and five runs, all earned, with three strikeouts and three walks. Sophomore Mark Montgomery/Williamsburg (Bruton) tossed the final scoreless and hitless inning of relief with one strikeout.

Justyn Carter (3-3, 2 RBI) and Brian Schroeder (3-4, 2 RBI) led Saint Peter's, including a home run by Carter. Ethan Jackson (3-5) had the mound loss for the Peacocks with the first 5.0 innings, yielding nine hits and eight runs, all earned.

In the nightcap, Longwood scored one run in the second and another run in the third for an early 2-0 lead. Saint Peter's, however, scored four runs in the third and another run in the fourth to lead 5-2. The Lancers added a run in the fifth to make it 5-3, and another run in the sixth to make it 5-4 but the Peacocks scored three runs in the sixth to secure their win.

In the second, Bailey (0-3, RBI) provided an RBI when reaching via a fielder's choice that scored Sollars (0-2) who had walked. In the third, Havers (1-2, RBI) delivered a sacrifice fly RBI that scored senior Scott Kimble/Spotsylvania (Spotsylvania) (0-3) who had walked as well. In the fifth, Smiy (0-4, RBI) added another RBI on a fielder's choice that scored Havers who had doubled, while in the sixth, sophomore #D.J. Pomposini#/Danville (George Washington) (2-2, RBI) hit a lead-off solo home run to left for his first homer this season. Jones (3-4) collected three hits to lead the Lancers, while Cerreto (1-4) added a hit to give him 254 career hits to tie the school-record (Brian Medley, 2001-04).

Havers and Jones each extended their respective hitting streaks to 25 and 21 games -- Havers' streak is the team's longest this year and ties for the school-record (Michael Tucker, 1991) while Jones' streak is fourth-best in the program's 33 years.

Junior Troy Dickman/Midlothian (Midlothian) (3-6) took the pitching loss for Longwood with the first 3.0-plus innings, allowing five hits and five runs, all earned, with no strikeouts and three walks.

Carter (2-3, 2 RBI) and Conor Mullee (1-3, 2 RBI) led Saint Peter's, including another homer by Carter. Jeremy Ives (3-5) had the mound win for the Peacocks with the first 5.0 innings, scattering six hits and three runs, all earned.
