BOX SCORE
FARMVILLE, Va. -- Longwood University took a 2-0 women's soccer shutout victory past visiting Southern Conference member Appalachian State University Sunday afternoon at the Athletics Complex in Farmville. Freshman forward
Lindsey Ottavio/Fairfax (W.T. Woodson) scored what proved to be the game-winning goal at 7:31 as the Lancers won their fourth consecutive contest to improve to 4-2 while the Mountaineers are now 3-3. Longwood will return to action on Wednesday, September 16, hosting Campbell University of the Atlantic Sun Conference at the Athletics Complex in Farmville beginning at 7 p.m..
Longwood opened the scoring early when Ottavio tallied her third goal of the season just 7:31 into the contest as she broke free inside the box and shot successfully from the right corner into the back of the net. The Lancers added another goal at 29:04 when sophomore defender
Kacie Oliver/Portsmouth, R.I. (Portsmouth) scored her first goal of the season with a hard shot past the keeper from 13 yards for a 2-0 lead at halftime. That took care of the scoring as each team only managed one shot on-goal during the second period.
“It's nice to finally score the first goal in the game,” said 16th-year Longwood head coach
Todd Dyer '93. “That allows us to relax a little and try to possess. We scored two fantastic goals today, and did a lot of nice things -- it was quality soccer and two great goals. We look forward to the next match.”
Longwood took a 10-6 advantage in shots, and it was 4-4 in attempts on-goal, while Appalachian State had a 4-3 edge on corner kicks. Freshman keeper
Kyra Byron/Richmond (Mills E. Godwin) posted her first collegiate shutout while playing the entire match in front of the net for Lancers with four saves. Caroline Clarke played the duration for the Mountaineers as well with two saves.
