BOX SCORE
MUNCIE, Ind. -- Longwood University took a 1-0 field hockey victory past Central Michigan University of the Mid-American Conference (MAC) Saturday afternoon in Muncie, Indiana at Ball State University. Sophomore forward
Amanda Babineau/Stafford (Mountain View) scored the only goal of the match for the Lancers who improved to 6-7 overall, while the Chippewas dropped to 4-10 overall. Longwood will play again on Sunday, October 18, remaining in Indiana to play at Ball State beginning at 1 p.m..
Longwood scored the only goal it would need just 5:27 into the contest when Babineau rebounded the ball in front of the cage and scored her third goal of the season. It would prove the game-winner as neither team would find the back of the cage for the remainder of the neutral-site match.
“We played really well and showed a lot of toughness to battle through the game and get the win,” said second-year head coach
Iain Byers. “I'm proud of how the girls played and hoping that tomorrow will be another strong performance against Ball State.”
The two teams played evenly throughout and tied in shots at 12-12, including 7-7 in attempts on-goal, though Central Michigan had a 16-6 edge on penalty corner opportunities. Junior keeper
Erin Bollinger/Midlothian (Clover Hill) played the entire match for Longwood with seven saves. Babineau and junior
Kimberly Sullivan/Fredericksburg (Stafford) each collected two on-goal shots, respectively, for LU. Melinda Curran played the duration for the Chippeawas with six saves.
It was the first-ever meeting between the two schools in field hockey.
