FARMVILLE, Va. -- Longwood University dropped a 3-1 women's soccer decision to the University of Richmond Sunday night at the Athletics Complex in Farmville.  The Lancers are now 1-1-1, while the Spiders of the Atlantic 10 Conference improved to 3-0.  Longwood will play again on Tuesday night, September 2, hosting VMI of the Big South Conference at the Athletics Complex on Johnston Drive beginning at 7 p.m..

Longwood and Richmond battled through a close first half with the Spiders ahead 1-0 at the intermission after a goal at 5:50 by Kelsey Rdzanek.  Rdzanek controlled a loose ball in the box and directed a shot over the keeper's head from close range on the only goal of the opening 45 minutes.  The best opportunity for the Lancers came about midway through at 21:22 when redshirt-sophomore Kaylyn Mahon/Spring Grove, Pa. (Spring Grove) took an attempt from outside the box that was saved.

Richmond went in front 2-0 at 64:48 when Emily Dale dribbled-in from the right side of the field and beat the keeper just inside the right post with her attempt.  Longwood closed the margin with an own-goal at 73:24 as junior Michelle DeSieno/Centreville (Chantilly) served the ball from the right-side of the box and a defender deflected the ball into the net.  The Spiders secured their road win with another goal at 81:08 when Nora Mann scored on a header in front of the net from a cross served by Bridget Kinealy.  The Lancers had one other good scoring opportunity at 59:26 as redshirt-junior Ashlee McConnell/Carlisle, Pa. (Carlisle) took a shot from the right-side of the box that was stopped on a nice save by the UR keeper.

Richmond took an 11-2 advantage in shots, including 6-3 in attempts on-goal, while the visitors also had a 5-2 edge in corner kicks.  Redshirt-sophomore keeper Marcia Biddle/Woodbridge (Gar-Field) made three saves while playing the duration in front of the net for Longwood.  Andrea Young played the entire match in goal for the Spiders as well with two saves.
