In his first season, he helped the Lancers post a 20-win turnaround that culminated with a run through the Big South Tournament that included a trip to the Big South Championship game. Longwood finished as the Big South Runner-Up, the best Big South Tournament run in team history.

The team’s 34-win campaign also matched the program’s largest win total in its Division I history, and the 20-win improvement tied the best year-over-year improvement in team history, set in 1991 by a team that went to the Division II World Series.

The Lancers won five games in the Big South Tournament, more than double their prior best, and the Lancers had four players earn Big South All-Tournament Team honors: Jon Howard, Ben Pulliam, Jae’dan Carter and JR Fordham. The four all-tournament selections were also a program high since joining the Big South.

Longwood had two First-Team All-Big South honorees this year in Fordham and Jaxon Lloyd, the first time the team had a pair of first-team honorees in the same season in the Big South. Pulliam and fellow freshman Brady Hoover also gave Longwood two Big South All-Freshman Team honorees for the first time.

Offensively, Longwood hit 55 home runs, the most since moving to the Division I level. The team also drew 302 walks, shattering the previous record by 42.

Howard tied for the second-most homers in a single season in team history with 16, and Pulliam was second in a single season in team history with 23 doubles. Tré Keels also drew 46 walks, breaking the team’s single-season record by an individual.

Prior to joining the Lancer staff, Stevens helped Ball State finish third in the MAC while winning 21 conference games and 36 games overall, and he helped guide the team to the best regular season fielding percentage in the nation (.984). He also served as the first base coach for a Cardinal squad that had a trio of All-MAC First Team selections, and the offense led the MAC in total hits (595).

Prior to Ball State, he spent two seasons on staff at Emmanuel in the NCAA Division II ranks. In 2024, he helped Emmanuel post its first 30-win season in team history at the Division II level. That campaign included 18 wins in Conference Carolinas. The team took a series over the 11th-ranked team in the nation, UNC Pembroke, as well as six three-game sweeps.

The 2024 success was built off a strong 2023 that saw the team post its best record to date in its Division II history.

He served as the head coach at Battle Mountain High School in Colorado from 2020-22 and helped lead the team to new levels of success. In 2021, the team’s 10-6 record in a shortened season was the best winning percentage in school history, and the team advanced to the postseason in 2022 for the first time in school history.

Stevens grew up in Colorado, where he played at Eagle Valley. He then played collegiately at Colby Community College before going to Evangel University to play for two seasons. He also played with the Gate City Grays and Ozark Generals.

Stevens holds his associate’s degree from Colby CC while earning his bachelor’s in sport management with a minor in coaching at Evangel. He obtained his master’s degree in positive coaching and athletic leadership from the University of Missouri. He lives with his wife Megan and his son Cal in Farmville.
