Dr. Michael Homer, DAT, LAT, ATC, was hired as an assistant athletic trainer at Longwood in August. He is in his first season with the Lancers in 2026-27.
Homer, who is responsible for the athletic training needs of the Longwood men's soccer and men's and women's tennis teams, brings extensive athletic training and sports medicine experience to the role, with a background spanning collegiate, professional and secondary school athletics.
Homer earned a Doctor of Athletic Training degree with a concentration in manual therapy from Florida in 2026 after completing a Master of Science in Athletic Training at Michigan State in 2024. He also earned a bachelor’s degree in kinesiology with a minor in health promotions from Michigan State in 2022.
Most recently, Homer served as head athletic trainer at Oak Hall School in Gainesville, Fla., where he provided comprehensive medical coverage for 21 sports and more than 200 student-athletes. He previously served as head athletic trainer at Columbia High School in Lake City, Fla., providing medical care across 19 sports for more than 400 student-athletes. Both positions were completed through the University of Florida Health Orthopedic and Sports Medicine Institute’s Doctor of Athletic Training residency program.
As part of his manual therapy concentration at Florida, Homer completed clinical experiences with the Gators' swimming & diving, football, tennis, golf and track & field programs. His experience included osteopathic manipulative medicine, joint mobilizations, muscle energy techniques and soft tissue mobilization, as well as modalities including shockwave therapy, INDIBA and Hivamat.
Homer also gained collegiate and professional experience through clinical rotations with Penn State’s men’s and women’s ice hockey programs and Michigan State’s wrestling, baseball, women’s soccer and football programs. In 2023, he completed an NFL summer internship with the Indianapolis Colts, gaining experience in rehabilitation, treatment, manual medicine, taping, bracing and acute care.
Homer is a board-certified athletic trainer and holds a Florida athletic trainer license. He is a member of the National Athletic Trainers’ Association, Professional Hockey Athletic Trainers Society, Great Lakes Athletic Trainers Association and Michigan Athletic Trainers Society.
He has also presented research at the National Athletic Trainers’ Association Convention and Great Lakes Athletic Trainers Association Annual Meeting.
