Dr. Consuelo Alvarez

Dr. Consuelo Alvarez served as Longwood's Faculty Athletics Representative from 2009-18 and transitioned into the role of Faculty Athletics Representative Emerita beginning in August, 2018. Dr. Alvarez is also Full Professor of Biochemistry and Genetics within the Cook-Cole College of Arts & Sciences at Longwood. During her time as a member of the Longwood faculty, she has published several papers relating to interdisciplinary research approaches at the university level while the recipient of the Maria Bristow Starke Faculty Excellence Award. 

Dr. Alvarez played hockey in high school and was a member of the basketball team that won the state championship.  As a multi-sport athlete herself, she understands the demands and motivation needed to be a successful student-athlete.  Dr. Alvarez values very much the interactions she maintains with all Lancers in class and on the field and has been working to help further recognize the academic accomplishments of student-athletes.

Dr. Alvarez earned an advanced degree in biochemistry and pharmacy from Universidad Central while competing in intramural volleyball, soccer, and basketball.  She received her Ph.D. in biochemistry at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign where she continued to actively participate in club league volleyball, soccer, softball and basketball.

A native of Ecuador, Dr. Alvarez and her husband, Gary, have a son, Henry.
