CHARLOTTE, N.C. — For the first time in history, the Longwood women's tennis team has earned the No. 1 seed for the Big South championship, the league announced Monday.
The Lancers, who finished in a three-way tie with Charleston Southern and UNC Asheville at 3-1 in league play, won the tiebreakers with the Buccaneers and Bulldogs for the top spot.
Longwood (9-7 overall) will open the tournament at the Lexington County Tennis Complex in Lexington, S.C., with a semifinal date Friday at 9 a.m., against the winner of the match between No. 4 NJIT and No. 5 Presbyterian.
The Longwood men's team, which finished second in the regular-season standings, but will play as the No. 3 seed in the tournament due to tiebreakers, will face sixth-seeded Bryant in the first round Thursday at 2 p.m.
Longwood finished 11-5 overall and 2-1 in the league.
Longwood has have never won Big South tournament championships in either women's or men's tennis.
