Softball Falls to Lindenwood, No. 4/5 Florida

Lions get walk-off win; Gators hit three homers in shutout

GAINESVILLE, Fla. — Madisen Noll lined a two-strike pitch to the gap in left-center field with two out in the bottom of the seventh, scoring Lucy Pratt from second, to lift Lindenwood to a 1-0 win over the Longwood softball team on Friday in the opening game of the Florida Tournament at Katie Seashole Pressly Stadium.

Then, in the second game of the day, the No. 4/5 Gators powered up with three home runs for a 10-0, five-inning win, improving to 15-0 on the season.

"Proud of our fight in game one," Longwood head coach Dr. Megan Brown said. "We are playing a lot of teams really close. Have to keep working towards being clutch in key situations. Those are the key pieces we need in place for conference. Thankful for the prep. Keeping our eyes focused on where we are going, not where we have been."

The game-ending hit against Lindenwood sent Longwood (1-9) to its third consecutive loss, despite a sixth straight complete-game effort from right-hander Maggie Chapin (1-5) to start the season. Chapin, who entered play Friday the NCAA leader in complete games, surrendered four hits, five walks and the one earned run while striking out five.

Longwood outhit Lindenwood (6-3), 6-4, getting 2-for-3 games at the plate from both Sarah Terrell in the No. 2 spot in the lineup and cleanup hitter Sophia Knock.

The Lancers, however, left seven on base, including runners on first and second and no one out in the top of the second inning after singles by Knock and Maggie Hiatt.

Longwood also loaded the bases with no outs in the fourth on base hits from Avery Miller and Knock, while Hiatt reached on an error, but Lindenwood righty Avery Wapp retired the next three batters in order to escape the threat.

Jolie McMinn worked a full-count walk from Chapin to beigin the bottom of the seventh inning and was sacrificed to second. After a Danielle Franz single, Chapin got Teryn Brown to fly to center for the second out before the walk-off hit.

Wapp improved to 3-1 with a six-strikeout complete game of her own.

Florida pounded out nine hits, including four for extra bases, while scoring in each of its four turns at bat. Taylor Shumaker blasted her fifth and sixth homers of the season in the second and third innings, respectively, and Kenleigh Cahalan added her sixth of the year, also in in the third.

Keagan Rothrock improved to 7-0 in the circle for Florida, going the first three innings with seven strikeouts against three walks. She gave way to Katelynn Oxley, who fanned three and hit one batter in her two frames.

Naleya Bridges' pinch-hit infield single in the top of the fourth inning off of Oxley broke up UF's not-hit bid.

Cierra Gawryluk (0-2) started in the circle for the Lancers, lasting an inning. She was relieved by Morgan Strickland and Mallory Sanders.

Longwood faces Middle Tennessee Saturday at 11:30 a.m., and Florida at 4:30 p.m.
