FARMVILLE, Va. — Catcher Brooke Bennett and center fielder Ava Abromavage hit home runs in the first and second innings, respectively, and right-hander Maggie Chapin turned in her fourth complete game of the season as the Longwood softball team opened the Longwood Invitational with a 5-4 victory over Toledo on Friday.
Bennett took a 3-2 pitch over the wall in right-center field for a two-run homer with one out in the first and Abromavage followed in the second with a two-run shot of her own with one gone in the second, staking the Lancers to a 5-1 lead after two innings. Bailey Bucholz contributed a run-scoring double down the left-field line, scoring Sophia Knock, after the Bennett homer.
Chapin (1-3) scattered seven hits and four earned runs while striking out five to pick up the win in the circle.Â
She ran into trouble in the top of the fifth as Toledo's Eli Enrique singled through the right side with one out to score Man Sitarski, who stole second to make it 4-2.
Chapin fanned Samantha Bolding and Aubrey Hensey in the frame, Audrey hit the Rockets' second homer of the day, a two-run blast to left. To cut the lead to 5-4.
Chapin, however, nailed down the victory in the seventh. Enriquez fouled out to left to start they inning before Bolding walked five pitches. Chapin, though induced an around-the-horn double play from Miller to end the game.
Bucholz went 2-for-2 with a walk for the Lancers, who posted six hits. Toledo (0-6) collected nine hits and also received a solo shot from Eliza Maloney in the second inning.
Longwood (1-5) and Toledo are back at 10 a.m., Saturday beginning a three-three day at the Longwood Invitational. No. 24/25 Virginia and Longwood play at 12:30 p.m., followed by Toledo and the Cavaliers at 3 p.m. Â
