NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — The Longwood women's tennis team closed its first weekend of fall competition at the CNU Duals by sweeping Mary Washington on Sunday.
The Lancers began the day winning the doubles point. At the top spot, Bali Song and Feline van Eijkelenburg defeated Isabella Rotaru and Jacey Copeland, 7-5. Hima Fernando and Oriana Izarra won at No. 2 over Sophia Broomall and Sarah Sandoval Banuelos, 6-3, and Alexandra Magia and Nicole Di Bisceglia topped Evie Snyder and Olivia Geoghegan, 6-3 at No. 3.
Longwood won five of the six singles matches in straight sets. Song beat Copeland, dropping just one game in the first set, 6-1, 6-0, at No. 1, while Fernando won, 6-1, 6-1, over Broomall at No. 3.
Alexis Broderick shut out Madison McCarty, 6-0, 6-0, at No. 6, before Magia outlasted Geoghegan, 4-6, 6-0, 10-3 at No. 5. Izarra defeated Naomi Feltman, 6-1, 6-2, at No. 3, and van Eijkelenburg was up, 5-0 in the first set when Sandoval Banuelos retired due to injury.
Di Bisceglia also beat beat Abiela Wang, 8-7, in singles action while Wang and Mady Holman topped Broderick and Hayley Garber on the doubles courts, 6-3.
Longwood finished the weekend 19-0 in singles and 8-2 in doubles.
The Lancers return to action Saturday and Sunday at the UMW Invitational in Fredericksburg, Va.
