Men's Tennis Wins 4-3 Thriller At Richmond

Puech Clinches Match In Come-From-Behind Win

RICHMOND – Longwood men's tennis had a flair for the dramatic en route to winning 4-3 over Richmond on Wednesday afternoon.

The Lancers (7-9) rallied to take down the Spiders (8-7) after falling behind 2-1 early, and Timeo Puech clinched the team's first win over Richmond since 2012 in the final match to finish on the day.

Longwood opened by taking the doubles point. Puech along with Mauricio Paiva Gonzalez won 7-6 at No. 1 doubles, and Petter Lindquist and Petar Belosevic won 7-6 at No. 2 doubles. Marko Mrdak and Alejandro Uribe lost at No. 3 doubles in a tight one, 7-6.

Richmond won at Nos. 4 and 2 singles to take the lead before Lindquist won in straight sets at No. 6. His 7-5, 6-2 knotted the score at two all.

Paiva Gonzalez worked his way to a 6-4, 6-2 win at No. 3 singles to put Longwood ahead 3-2, but Richmond won at No. 5 singles.

That set the stage for Puech. After falling in the first set at No. 1 singles 6-4, he stormed back to win the final two sets 6-2, 6-2.

The Lancers return home to host UNC Asheville on Friday, April 11th at 10:30 a.m. It is Senior Day at the New Lancer Courts.
