FARMVILLE, Va. –Maggie Hiatt was a big-time source of offense on Saturday for Longwood softball, and the Lancers swept a doubleheader against Presbyterian 4-3 and 9-1.
Â
Hiatt swatted two home runs on the day and racked up seven RBI through the two games to help the Lancers (11-22, 5-3 Big South) extend their winning streak to five straight games.
Â
The Lancer pitching staff also combined to limit Presbyterian (19-18, 3-5 Big South) to four runs over 12 innings of work while striking out nine.
Â
"I'm very proud of our team for working together and staying as a unit through two hard-fought games," said Longwood Head Coach
Dr. Megan Brown. "I'm proud of their resilience and grit."
Â
Game 1: Longwood 4, Presbyterian 3
Â
The first game was a pitcher's duel between
Maggie Chapin and Peyton Duncan, with the two pitchers pitching four scoreless frames to begin.
Â
Presbyterian finally struck first on base hits from Kendall Owens and Mallory Fletcher to take a 2-0 lead in the fifth, but Longwood had the response.
Â
With two outs,
Sophia Knock hammered out Longwood's first hit of the game, a solo home run to left field. That loosened things up, as
Avery Drake walked and Brooke Bennet singled. Then Hiatt cranked a three-run home run down the left field line to push the Lancers ahead, 4-2.
Â
Presbyterian put runners on in the sixth, but
Er'ron Burton came on in relief of Chapin in the circle to escape the trouble.
Â
The Blue Hose cut the lead to one in the seventh and had the tying run at third, but Burton tightened up and recorded a strikeout to preserve the win.
Â
Chapin (6-9) earned the win with 5.1 innings. She struck out seven while giving up two runs on eight hits and three walks. Burton picked up her first save of the season after surrendering one unearned run on one hit and a walk while striking out one in 1.2 innings.
Â
Peyton Duncan (10-8) took the loss after giving up four runs, all earned, on three hits and four walks. She struck out two in 4.2 innings of work.
Â
Game 2: Longwood 9, Presbyterian 1 (Five Innings)
Â
In game two, Presbyterian took the lead in the top of the first, but
Morgan Strickland wiggled out of trouble and cruised in the circle for Longwood from that point on.
Â
Meanwhile, Hiatt provided plenty of run support in the first. She clobbered a three-run home run to left-centerfield in the bottom half of the frame for a 3-1 lead.
Â
Strickland then gave up one hit the rest of the way and retired the side in order three times in the next four innings.
Â
Meanwhile, the offense batted around in the home half of the fourth to put the game out of reach. The Lancers loaded the bases, and Hiatt hit a sacrifice fly to center to open the scoring. With two outs,
Avery Miller hit a two-run single to right field, and
Naleya Bridges tripled home two more runs. She came home on
Sarah Terrell's RBI single one batter later for a 9-1 lead.
Â
Strickland (2-5) set down Presbyterian in order in the fifth to close it out and earn the win. She gave up one run on three hits and two walks while striking out one.
Â
Grace Kelley (4-2) took the loss for Presbyterian. She gave up eight runs on eight hits and two walks in 3.2 innings.
Â
The Lancers have a chance to sweep the series on Sunday afternoon. First pitch has been moved up to noon, and the game will air on ESPN+.
