LEXINGTON, S.C. — The third-seeded Longwood men's team's season came to an end in the Big South semifinals against No. 2 UNC Asheville in a 4-1 loss at the Lexington County Tennis Complex on Thursday.
The Lancers battled in doubles against the Bulldogs, forcing a deciding match on court three before Asheville claimed the early lead.
Mauricio Gonzalez Paiva and
Timéo Puech opened doubles with a 6-0 win over Cian Ingles and Freddy Murray at No. 1. Tarek Erlewein and Olle Sonesson Lidholt knotted things at 1-1 with a 6-4 victory at No. 2 against
Petar Belosevic and
Petter Lindquist. Sai Gandepalli and Griffin Lovern earned the doubles point with a 6-3 decision versus
Marko Mrdak and
Alejandro Uribe at No. 3.
Ingles advanced past Mrdak at No. 5 singles. After dropping the first set, 6-1, Mrdak retired, giving the the Bulldogs a 2-0 lead. Erlewein also also got by Belosevic after a second-set retirement at No. 2.Erlewein won the first set, 6-3, before Belosevic could not continue in the match up, 1-0 in the second.
Puech kept the dual alive for the Lancers with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Murray to pull Longwood within 3-1. Gandepalli, however, defeated Uribe, 6-3, 7-5, at No. 4 to clinch the victory.
The Lancers, who advanced to the Big South semifinals for the second time in as many seasons, see their season come to a close at 7-11 overall.
UNC Asheville improves to 12-8 on the year and advances to face top-seeded Gardner-Webb Friday at 3 p.m., for the championship.
