FARMVILLE, Va. — The Longwood women's tennis team won for the fourth time in its last five matches, defeating visiting Norfolk State, 4-3, at the New Lancer Courts on Tuesday.
Longwood (5-4) took the doubles point, winning on courts one and two.
First,
Karina Rizvanova and
Elizaveta Gnilozubova topped Sofiya Tsitavets and Yulia Yurkova, 6-2, then
Feline van Eijkelenburg and
Alexandra Magia beat Irina and Sabina Iurea, 6-3.
The Spartans (4-4) took a 2-1 lead in the dual opening singles action with victories at Nos. 1 and 3 before Rizvanova outlasted Tsitavets on court two, 2-6, 6-2, 6-1, to knot things, 2-2.
Magia then defeated Irina Iurea, 6-4, 2-6, 7-5, to make it 3-2.
Phoebe Mitchell clinched the match for Longwood, winning her second consecutive singles match by retirement. She won the first set over Angelina Maniawska at No. 4 prior to Maniawska bowing out due to injury.
Sabina Iurea closed the day with a three-set win over
Kashmira Manohar on court six for the final tally.
The Lancers return to the court on Saturday Mach 15 in their Big South Conference opener at Gardner-Webb. First serve is set for 1 p.m.
