FARMVILLE, Va. — The Longwood women's tennis team earned the doubles point, but UNC Asheville rallied in singles to claim the match, 6-1, in Big South action at the New Lancer Courts on Saturday.
The Bulldogs' Luise van Rensburg and Ari Siegel opened doubles with a 6-4 victory over
Phoebe Mitchell and
Oriana Izarra on No. 3 before Longwood (6-8, 0-2) took the next two matches on courts two and one, respectively.
First,
Alexandra Magia and
Feline van Eijkelenburg defeated Avery Sager and Valeria Centeno, 6-3, then
Elizaveta Gnilozubova and
Karina Rizvanova topped Angelina Joy Hug and Elizabeth Tindera, 7-5.
Keira Stewart tied the match, winning at No. 5 singles, 6-4, 6-0, over Magia, while Tinder beat Izarra, 6-1, 6-1, on court three for the lead.
Alexis Nyborg then got past Rizvanova, 6-4, 6-4, at No. 1 to make it 3-1. Asheville clinched the victory when Centeno beat Gnilozubova in three sets, 1-6, 6-3, 6-1 on No. 6.
Louise Booker outlasted Mitchell, 1-6, 6-4, 6-2, on No. 4 and Hug slipped by van Eijkelenburg, 7-5, 2-6 7-6 (5) to close the dual.
The Bulldogs improved to 9-5 overall and 1-0 in the league with the win.
Longwood returns to the court on Friday at home against Presbyterian at 9 a.m.
