HOW IT HAPPENED:
Garcia was sharp throughout the afternoon for the Lancers. He kept an ETSU offense that had scored more than 10 runs in each of the prior two games off the scoreboard for seven innings.
The Lancer righthander struck out three and gave up six hits, and he only surrendered three runs in the eighth inning after seven scoreless frames.
Meanwhile, the Longwood offense struck first.
In the fourth inning, Longwood rallied against the Southern Conference preseason co-Pitcher of the Year, Michael Harpster. The Lancers loaded the bases without a hit, and then
Bentley Yeatts singled up the middle to plate two runs for a 2-0 lead.
In the fifth, the Lancers added a run without a hit when
James Nelson hit a sacrifice fly to left field for a 3-0 lead.
Garcia continued to put up goose eggs until one big swing in the eighth. With two on and one out, Palmese hit a three-run home run to tie the score.
Sam DiLella took over on the mound and kept ETSU off the board through the end of the ninth.
The score stayed put until the top of the 11
th, when the Lancers again scraped across a run to take a 4-3 lead.
The Bucs again answered in the bottom of the 11
th. A single and double put runners at second and third with one out, and Melendez hit his single up the middle to win the game.
Andrew Ronne (1-0) picked up the win for ETSU after pitching the final two outs of the 11
th. He walked one and struck out one.
Alex Strickland (0-2) took the loss for Longwood. He pitched a scoreless 10
th before being charged with two runs in the 11
th.
WHAT THEY SAID:
"Garcia was absolutely incredible tonight," said Longwood Head Coach
Ray Noe. "It was the exact response we needed to have on the mound after yesterday, and when that guy toes the rubber, he can go head to head against anyone in the country."
"The offense did a good job of getting their starter out early and kept the pressure on them throughout the game," Noe said. "We executed some timely situational hitting opportunities throughout the course of the game which helped us score first and continue to add to our lead."
"I felt like we learned a lot about our team this weekend which is exciting heading into conference play next week," Noe added.
