Lancer Men Face Off Against ACC Foe Wake Forest

THE OPENING TIP
•    Longwood opens a two-game road swing prior to a break for the holidays with a trip to Wake Forest on Wednesday.
•    The Lancers will wrap it up with a game at North Carolina Central on Saturday, December 20 before an eight-day break.
•    Including the game against Wake Forest, the Lancers have three remaining non-conference tilts prior to the start of conference action on New Year's Eve.
•    Wake Forest was picked to finish 11th in the 18-team ACC.
•    Longwood was picked third in the Big South preseason poll, although two total points separated the third through fifth place teams.
•    Elijah Tucker was a Preseason All-Big South First Team selection
•    Longwood leads the Big South in free throw attempts and makes per game and ranks in the top 20 nationally in both categories.
 
LAST TIME OUT
•    Longwood rallied twice but came up just short against Delaware State on Saturday, falling 81-76.
•    The Hornets were an incredible 15-20 from the floor after halftime and hit an array of tough shots in the game's closing minutes to keep the Lancers at bay.
•    Five players scored in double figures for DSU while Longwood saw three players reach double digits in scoring.
•    Elijah Tucker had a team-best 20 points while shooting 8-9 from the floor, and he added seven boards, two blocks and two steals.
•    Jaylen Benard hit three triples en route to 15 points, and Johan Nziemi added 13 points and 10 rebounds for his first double-double of the season.
•    However, it wasn't enough to overcome 17 points apiece for Corey Perkins, Ademar Santos and Camian Shell.
•    Shell was sensational for Delaware State, going 5-6 from the floor in his best outing of the season.
 
BY THE NUMBERS
•    Longwood is playing its second ACC opponent of the season after a road trip to Pitt in November.
•    It is the first time Longwood has played two ACC schools in the same season since 2020-21, when the Lancers played Wake Forest and 24th ranked Virginia Tech.
•    To this point, Longwood has played six home games, four two road games and a pair of neutral site games, with two road games and one home game left on the non-conference slate.
•    Longwood has outrebounded its opponent seven times this year and is 5-2 when doing so.
•    Free throws have been a big part of Longwood's offense, with the team 6-3 when it takes more free throws than its opponent.
•    Longwood ranks 17th in the nation in free throw attempts, averaging 27.8 attempts per game.
•    The Lancers rank seventh nationally with 21.4 made free throws per game.
•    Six times, the team has shot better than 85 percent from the free throw line in a game, including an 18-20 effort against Delaware State on December 13. The .900 free throw percentage in that game was a season-best mark.
•    The team has shot at least 40 free throws in a game four times this year and is 3-1 in those games.
•    Longwood also attacks the paint, and the team is 6-2 when scoring at least 30 points in the paint. The team's season-high is 72 points in the paint, done against Pfeiffer on 12-3.
•    Four times, the team has had a game with five players reaching double figures, and the Lancers are 3-1 in such contests.
•    The Lancers rank second in the Big South and 33rd nationally by forcing 15.8 turnovers per game.

•    The last time the two teams met was in Winston-Salem to open the 2020-21 season where scheduling was impacted by the COVID pandemic.
•    Longwood was led by 13 points from Juan Munoz and 11 from Justin Hill.
•    The first meeting in 2005 saw Wake Forest pull away early as future NBA All-Star Chris Paul scoring 10 points for the Demon Deacons.
