GREENSBORO, N.C. – Longwood women's golf battled an up-and-down day to open the UNCG Collegiate at Forest Oaks Country Club today.
Caroline Tragesser and
Avery Nordman led four Lancers into the top 25 in the 67-player field following 36 holes, and Longwood sits fifth with one round to play.
NOTABLE RESULTS:
The Lancers were at their best in the first round, when the team carded a 295 that was tied for first with UNC Asheville after 18 holes. Tragesser fired off her best round as a Lancer, carding a one-under 71 in the process.
However, Longwood cooled off a bit in round two to finish the day fifth. The team is only two shots back of Radford in fourth and three back of Georgia State in third. UNC Asheville leads the way, 13 shots ahead of the Lancers, and the hosts, UNCG, sit in second, 11 shots ahead of Longwood.
Tragesser ended the day tied for 15
th following her stellar opening round. She tied for the low round of the opening round and was one of seven rounds under par on the day. She had a trio of birdies in the opening round—four on the day—and played her final 11 holes at one-under. She ended the day with a 71-79—150 (+6).
Avery Nordman, meanwhile, also tied for 15
th. The freshman standout was largely consistent throughout her 36 holes. She had three birdies and 26 pars to post a 75-75—150 (+6) scorecard.
Chiara Wippert also had a strong first round with four birdies en route to a one-over 73. She tied for 22
nd after ending the day with a 73-79—152 (+8) that saw her card five birdies in her 36 holes.
Madison Lehr knocked two strokes off her opening-round 77 in the second round, firing a 75 that saw her move up into a tie for 22
nd with a 77-75—152 (+8). She finished the day with five birdies.
Abigail Sheldon sits tied for 34
th following her two rounds. She posted a 76-78—154 (+10), and she birdied two of her final three holes to close the day.
WHAT THEY SAID:
"Today was the definition of inconsistent," said Longwood Head Coach
Megan Weaver. "We started off with a solid round one. Caroline strung together a great one-under round. Everyone else played well despite a bad hole or a rough start. Then, round two was painful; we could not stop the bleeding. You aren't going to maintain the lead with the number of double-plus holes that we did. The other problem is we have a tendency of all playing well or all struggling, instead of staggering the bad rounds, so the five-count-four team score can still be consistent. We will reflect on today, make a few adjustments, and leave this second round in the past!"
